INTERVIEWING

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a technique that refers to a counseling approach initially developed by clinical psychologists Professor William Miller, Ph.D. and Professor Stephen Rollnick, PhD. MI recognizes and accepts the fact people/clients who need to make changes in their lives approach counseling at different levels of readiness to change their behavior (stages of change). Also, it recognizes the client’s ability to make decisions and take actions to achieve the change through intrinsic motivation. Motivational interviewing is non-judgmental, non-confrontational and non-adversarial. Motivational interviewing is considered to be both client centered and semi-directive. It is the usefulness of direction and building client motivation where the approach shows applicability to education (guidance and behavior), mental health, addictions, medicine, and corrections. There is a large body of evidence that supports the use of MI to effect change in both adults and juveniles as well as across cultures.

EBS offers multiple levels of training in MI ranging from overview presentations to traininng for trainers. We also offer skill development and feedback for beginning and advanced MI practitioners.
